Inside there was a key.
“What is this?”
“The house I bought next to Leo’s school.”
I looked at him.
“You bought a house?”
“Yes.”
“And why are you giving me the key?”
He smiled.
“Because Leo said my apartment was too small for his dinosaurs.”
I laughed.
It was the first time in years that something connected to building a family didn’t frighten me.
Sebastian took my hand.
“I don’t want to recover the life we lost, Rachel.”
“Good.”
“I want to build another one with you. Only if you want it too.”
This time I didn’t answer immediately.
I had learned that important decisions don’t need to be rushed.
A year later we were married in a small ceremony in Napa Valley.
Leo walked with me to Sebastian.
When we stood in front of him, my son raised his head.
“Now can I officially call you Dad?”
Sebastian knelt down.
His eyes filled with tears.
“You’ve been able to call me that for a long time.”
Years later, while I watched Sebastian run through the garden after Leo and our daughter Luna, I thought about that morning in Manhattan.
For a long time I believed my life had ended on that table.
It hadn’t.
What ended there was the woman who needed to make herself small in order to feel loved.
Julian believed he had found an orphan with no family, no power, and no way out.
Simone believed I was simply a door into the Montgomery empire.
They were both wrong for the same reason.
They never bothered to know me.
I had hidden my last name to discover who could love me without it.
In the end I learned something far more important.
I would never again hide who I was to earn anyone’s love.
My name is Rachel Montgomery.
I survived the man who tried to take my child, the woman who turned my marriage into an operation, and the lies that destroyed the life I thought I had.
And when it was all over, I understood that my greatest victory was not recovering my money or watching those who betrayed me fall.
It was coming home with my son in my arms and discovering that, after everything they tried to tear away from me, I could still build a life that belonged completely to me.
