“So when I say my real father is in this gym tonight, I’m not talking about the man in the second row.
“Rory Bassett has been my dad since I was four. He’s the one who’s been sitting behind that bench since I was in seventh grade, and he’s at every single one, and he’s never once yelled at a referee, which honestly is a personal failing.
“He didn’t get me because he wanted a kid. He got me because somebody had to and he was the only person in the room.
“I invited Grady tonight because he wanted a relationship with me, and I decided he should have exactly the one he earned. This is it. This is the whole thing. It’s about ninety seconds long and there are four thousand witnesses.
“Sir, you can go now.”
Grady Wolcott walked out of Dunmoor Coliseum through four thousand people and it took him about forty seconds and nobody said anything to him.
I didn’t watch. I was still down on one knee.
Here’s the rest of it.
He was not entirely wrong about there being money involved, and I want to include this because it’s the part that makes it real instead of a story.
Amari signs with a Division I program in the fall. There’s an NIL package attached to it that is not life-changing but is more money than I made in the first six years of raising him.
Grady’s messages in January had started to include the words “manage” and “family office” and “before you sign anything.”
On the fourth of February, Grady Wolcott’s assistant contacted a collective and represented Grady as Amari’s father. Not adoptive parent. Father.
That’s a real thing that happened and it’s why Amari finally answered him. He answered on the eighth of February with one line: Come to the state final on March 14th.
And that’s the only message my son ever sent that man.
There is a letter from a lawyer named Marguerite Ossler now, and it did not go any further than a letter, because Grady’s own lawyers presumably watched the video like everybody else.
Amari committed on the eleventh of April, to a school ninety minutes from my house. He had two offers further away that were, on paper, better.
I fought him about it for a week. I lost.
He said one thing that ended it, which was: “You worked six days a week until I was eight. You get to see the games.”
He is eighteen and he has learned exactly how to do that to me.
I still work at Tulley’s. I own a third of it now; Dev Tulley sold me in over four years and it’s the best money I ever spent.
Neve and I got married in June. She has been in this since 2021 and Amari gave a toast that was mostly about her, which was the correct call.
Some things I’ve thought about since.
I did not tell him about that letter for nine years and I’d do it again. I want to say that plainly, because a lot of people have told me I was wrong to hide it.
A nine-year-old boy can survive knowing his father left. A nine-year-old boy should not have to also know his father priced him.
He found it at seventeen, when he was old enough to hold it, and I would rather he found it in a box than heard it from me at nine.
He disagrees with me about this. We’ve argued about it twice.
And I keep coming back to the fourth of March at four in the morning, standing in a dark kitchen, genuinely not knowing what a boy would do with a man in a good suit.
I got that wrong.
