And in the November he came home at half six in the morning, showered, changed, and drove our daughter to a swimming gala, and stood at the side of a pool for two hours having been awake for twenty-six.
He did not tell me that either. I found the shift rota afterwards and worked it out with a calendar.
So the same man was both of those things at once, on the same Saturday, and I have had to learn to hold that without one of them cancelling the other.
It has been seven months.
He is back. Not there — somewhere else, forty minutes away, on a lower band, and he has never once complained about that in my hearing.
We did eleven weeks with a woman on Wednesdays and we are doing more.
The hardest single conversation was not about the lie. It was about the badge.
Because he clipped it to his pocket every morning in front of me, and I asked him about that, and he said: I couldn’t work out how to walk out of the house without it.
Cassian resigned in the June. I did not ask him to and neither did Soren, and I have decided that is his business.
That night, the Tuesday, I did not go home and wait.
I drove out to Brackley Cross at about eleven and parked where I could see the staff entrance, with the lunch box still on the passenger seat.

I did not get out. I sat in that car until half past midnight and then I drove home.
I have never told him that. It is the one thing left and I do not know if I will.
Here is the only thing I have.
Everybody wants this to be about a man who lied to his wife for eleven months.
He did. Every morning, at a kitchen door, with a badge.
But he lied to a woman who had stood up at a fundraiser and told three hundred people exactly which husband she was proud of.

So when he stopped being one, there was no version of him left that he thought I would have.
