June stepped forward and took the microphone.
“Our father couldn’t be here today,” she said.
I immediately knew she wasn’t talking about my brother.
She was talking about me.
Ava reached into her graduation gown and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
I looked at the three of them.
They were standing shoulder to shoulder.
Then June spoke again.
“We found something he left behind.”
I wasn’t sure what she meant.
Then Ava unfolded the paper.
She looked down at the first line.
And as she began to read, something inside me changed.
I recognized the words.
I recognized the handwriting.
And suddenly, after twenty-two years of raising three girls who had once been left on my doorstep, I understood that there were parts of their story I had never known.
The room became completely silent.
I could barely breathe.
Then June continued reading.
And before I could hear the next sentence, my knees gave out beneath me.
I dropped into my seat, overwhelmed by what the three women standing on that stage had chosen to do for me.
After everything we’d been through, I finally understood that the story of those three babies wasn’t only about what I had given up for them.
It was also about everything they had quietly remembered.
And what happened next was something I never expected to experience.
