After the divorce, I had no one left to lean on. Because of the child growing inside me, I swallowed my pride and did every job I could find. On the day I went into labor, I drove myself to the hospital, trembling through every red light.

“You removed medical coverage from a woman carrying your child?”

“She’s my ex-wife.”

“And the baby?”

Eleanor touched Julian’s arm.

“Enough. We’ll let the lawyers deal with this.”

“Good,” I said.

“Bring them.”

Both of them turned toward me.

I reached into my hospital bag. Hospitals& Treatment Centers

Then I pulled out a thick folder.

Not the originals.

Those were already safe with my attorney.

Copies.

Julian saw the printed emails.

His face lost color.

I lifted the first page.

“This one is interesting. Your mother suggests spreading the affair story if I don’t agree to the custody terms.”

Eleanor went completely still.

I lifted another document.

“And then we have transfers from your charitable foundation into consulting companies with very little actual consulting.”

Another page.

“Invoices that don’t match the services described.”

Another.

“And the insurance cancellation submitted under a signature I never approved.”

Julian stepped forward.

“Give me that.”

Marcus moved between us.

“Back up.”

Julian glared at him.

“You have no idea who you’re defending.”

Marcus looked toward my son.

For one second, his expression broke.

“Yes,” he said quietly.

“I think I do.”

That night, after Julian and Eleanor finally left, my son slept against my chest.

A few hours later, Dr. Thorne returned alone.

He pulled a chair beside my bed.

“Vivian,” he said, “there is something you need to know about Julian.”

The way he said it told me the next sentence was going to change everything.
Marcus sat beside my hospital bed for several seconds without speaking.

Then he finally said,

“Julian is my son.”

I stared at him.

“My husband is your son?” Marriage

He nodded.

“Eleanor and I divorced when Julian was five.”

His voice became quieter.
