Turkey hunting down south to kick off the week. Almost stepped on this guy. Anyone know what kind it is?

A male also has a beard, which is actually a specialized cluster of bristle-like feathers growing from the chest.

Beard length can be useful when judging a gobbler, but it should not be treated as a foolproof subspecies identification tool.

Different birds grow different-sized beards, and wear, age and genetics all play a role.

The same is true of spurs.

A mature gobbler may have prominent leg spurs, which can provide clues about age and physical development, but they do not automatically tell you which subspecies you are looking at.

The Tail Is Often the Better Clue

If you are trying to identify a turkey from a photograph, the tail remains one of the most useful features.Download Nature Guides

The Eastern’s darker chestnut-brown tail tips contrast with the buff or tan coloration commonly associated with Rio Grande turkeys.

Merriam’s turkeys provide another interesting comparison because they have much whiter tail tips. The National Wild Turkey Federation notes that Merriam’s turkeys have snow-white tips and generally show more white than black on their wings.

That creates a useful visual spectrum:

Dark chestnut-brown can suggest Eastern.

Tan or buff can suggest Rio Grande.

White-tipped tail feathers can suggest Merriam’s.Source Livestock Feed

Very dark wing coloration can point toward Osceola in Florida.

But again, geography matters.

The Best Turkey Identification Method

The most reliable identification does not come from one feature alone.

Instead, consider several clues together.

Start with location.

Where was the bird seen?

Then look at the tail.

What color are the tips?

Next, examine the wings.Explore Hunting Gear

Are they strongly barred with black and white, or unusually dark?

Then consider the overall body coloration.

Does the bird appear coppery, bronze, dark purple, greenish or buff?

Finally, look at the bird’s size, beard and legs.

These details can help narrow down the possibilities.

The National Wild Turkey Federation’s identification guides emphasize this combination of physical characteristics and geographic distribution when discussing the major turkey subspecies.
